Masterpieces/UNIQUE pieces written for one of the 3 symphony orchestra sections(not the strings)?

Perhaps my question is ineptly phrased. What I’m asking for are compositions, that were written for one of the groups/sections of the standard symphony orchestras three(3) sections, excluding the strings: a harp inclusion is permissible; but no suites for strings, string quartets, quintets, etc.

Given, the horns(French)are generally considered to be a member of either the brass or woodwinds.

So, music written for brass choirs, woodwind ensembles and percussion – what(?) ensembles?

That for percussion I would imagine would be the most difficult to come up with a good nominee for; should be the most fun.((no “real far out” instruments))

Please note: no combination of any of the three; and that you’re nominees must be considered real masterpieces, or very unique.

Have fun(?)

Alberich
“hfrankm”: Thanks. Exactly what I am requesting.

“Lisa”: You need a 2nd cup of coffee: “no strings”; gave you a “thumbs down”.
Alberich
“Ursula C”: Lisa is a wonderful person, and I love her too. But have become annoyed with responders to my questions, that do not follow the guide-lines: no matter who they are.

So, you are free to respond, or not; but I will not apologize.

Alberich
“Pianist D’aurellis”: I don’t know your age – checked your profile – but I’ve proabably been around much longer than you(73 yrs.); and can assure you that when I was in school, they in any text referenced or authority invoked, always considered them to be members of either section. And I certainly agree, that they are the best brass instrument.

Tried my hand at performing on them; but turned out, I was probably the worlds worst ever, would be Horn player.

Regarding Popular Music (Answer If You Get Music)?

Please only answer if you understand music..
Would the Pop/Rock genres improve if artists chose to work within the AABA (pop) song format? It seems to me that back when songs had to follow that format (when songs couldn’t be longer than 3 minutes for radio play), even groups that sucked could put together decent material. Today, it’s like even the bands with talent and vision produce work that’s too self consiously arty/epic, and lack restraint and focus. I wonder if some of the rising “indie” bands (probably the only worthy scene in rock just because they emulate the ’60s sound) would be creating great, focused masterpieces if there were more theory/conciseness involved.. I understand the Beatles (arguably) opened up the possibilities of pop/rock music with Revolver/Sgt. Pepper, but too much freedom has created a lot of crap (though restrictions do suck too). I would argue that there are no classic records being made; there are definitely good ones, but no masterpieces..I don’t know..

Do you consider yourself a music fan?

Do you? If so, then why is it when I ask questions about MFSL, MOFI, MVI, or SACD no one but Vaportrails and I seem to know anything about these wonderful hi-fidelity items? A month or so ago I asked about SACD and no one even knew what it was. Earlier I asked about MOFI and MFSL and VT is the only one that responded. If your into music you people MUST start getting into these hi-fidelity products! You wouldn’t believe the difference in the sound. I know some of you may be to young to buy these high end products. But you should still know about them.

Sorry to rant and rave like this. I just hate to see another music fan miss out on such great hi-fidelity masterpieces.

MQ: Your favorite Metal song?
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab- MFSL

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (now)- MOFI

Super Audio CD- SACD

MVI- Musci Video Interactive
Of course you all are music fans. But if you are a hardcore music fan… Get some of the $hit! IT ROCKS!!!!
Vickey- I knew the question title would get attention. I hoped anyway. Like I said in my statement that I know some people can’t afford some of the stuff. You all should be versed in it though. Trust me… It is good for things besides classical. Megadeath has a MOFI cd and RUSH and Pink Floyd has them as well. Pink Floyd, Godsmack , Alice in chains, and others have SACD’s as well. RUSH has an MVI disc.
Vicky*** sorry
Once some of you get older you might understand better.
Thanks all of you though. All I hope for is that it will get some people interested and researching.
WHAT IS SACD… http://www.sonymusic.com/sacd/faq/index.html

WHAT IS MOFI… www.mofi.com

WHAT IS MVI… http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_5949092_2?ie=UTF8&node=384619011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=1MFFAGX1G01VYR2VHY26&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=367189601&pf_rd_i=B000OPOANE
Well Cookie Cutter if you WERE versed in this stuff you would know I am not talking just about equipment. MOFI cd’s are not equipment. They are high quality CD’s. I also didn’t say that you are not a music fan… I said if you do consider yourself a music fan why do you not know about this stuff and I have got answers. I would agree that music can be played on LP or mp3 player and it is still great. You DO need to Feel music and I can tell you SIR… You haven’t FELT music until you have heard Dark Side of the Moon on SACD or RUSH Snakes and Arrows on MVI so loud it peels your fu*king face off! So to you sir I think YOUR post is one of the most ridiculous I have seen in a long time. You posted with out fully understanding anything I was saying.
And actually Cookie Cutter you speak of LP hitting the true Highs and Lows. SACD is the only format out that can push “ALL AUDIBLE” HIGHS AND LOWS. Actually it hits ranges that are non-audible to the human ear it is so detailed. I do have LP’s and I know they are great. The truth is that, yes, most average fans will not here all the detail I do. The point is these hi-fidelity products DO produce better sound quality than ANYTHING else; including LP. Various bands have done these fromats with the same compliments about them… They let the fans finally hear the music the way the bands intended.
When did a CD become a “gadget”?

I can see this is going no where. If any of you people heard a SACD or Gold Disc before you would understand.

Greatest Organ masterpieces: which are your choices? 3-7/no more than 7 please?

Sunday morning. Not going to church, but seem to be in a spiritual frame of mind; and seem to be in the mood for organ music: listening to “the Widor Toccata”.

Care to list 3-7 of your favorites, and perhaps elaborate on why you feel they are masterpieces?

I’ll list 3 of mine:

(1) “Pasaccaglia & Fugue in C-minor”: J.S. Bach.

(2) “Toccata(5th/last movement)Organ Symphony #-5″: Charles Marie-Widor.

(3) “Piece Heroique”: Cesar Franck.

Please list no more than 7.

How has classical music changed or influenced your character?

Hello!

This is somewhat of a practice question, to see if it gets posted properly. (My first question… Yay! :D )

But I am curious to know, how has classical music changed or influenced your character?
I know that, in addition to adding a whole new level of culture to my life, classical has contributed to making me a better person. It has:

1. Improved my knowledge of history greatly. While researching composers, I learned about things that occurred during their lives and influenced them, and I began understanding more and more about the history of many countries and cultures.
2. Given me the determination and drive to succeed at an instrument. I play the piano, and being able to bring such amazing masterpieces to life just makes me want to learn more than I ever have before. I haven’t been taking lessons for long, but I am improving every day!
3. Helped me with my self-image. I went through a phase where I was so worried of what others thought of my looks and spent a great deal of time fretting over things I couldn’t change about myself. But then, it hit me – what could ever make me feel more beautiful than when the music of a genius flowed out from my fingers and into my heart? Nothing. True beauty can be found in sound, not just sight.

The list could go on, but this is about you! Please share your story!
Thank you and take care,
Mina
Once again, I have successfully found the edit button!
To: bassoon_girl
You play the bassoon? Amazing! Yet another instrument I would love to pick up but don’t have time for… oh well. Thanks for your answer!
To: Joshua Haines
You are a composer? And a transcriber? And only 15? Are you… Jesus? (Just kidding, if that offended anyone, I am only joking!)

Anyways, don’t worry about anyone who laughs because they don’t like classical music… they are the ones missing out! If they can’t recognize something beautiful when they hear it it’s their loss.
And about most of this generation’s taste in music… yes. It’s sad. And disgusting. I sometimes have to wonder, do they even realize the pervertedness of most of the songs they listen to, or do they just think it’s okay to say those things? Yeesh.

I sent you an email back… (without reading this first, sorry) and I hope it worked.
To: i. jones

Thank-you for your kind words! It means a lot. And you are a composer too? That’s amazing! The greats all inspire us in a way, I hope that one day I’ll be able to write music with the spirit they had.

Thanks againfor your answer!
To: ICJ

Thanks for your answer! It’s great that you try and share the joys of classical music with others, something I’m still too shy to do. Keep it up!
To: Biedronka

Yes, we are all so lucky to be living in times where war is not the first thing on our minds. Classical music gives us insight to what it was like when things were different, and that’s a valuable gift, I agree!

Thanks for your answer!

What are some songs that you consider metal masterpieces?

You know metal songs that you consider genius…….

The first song that comes to mind for me is,
“Celestial Furnace” by Disarmonia Mundi…..it is such an amazing song by a band that isn’t well know and can’t even tour because one guy does all their instruments…..yet they can still make freaking unbelievable music…..every aspect of the song is complete genius……

What do you think about today’s main manifestations of African American music?

I mean, don’t take me wrong but most of today’s African American artists are not a whole lot compared to their antecedents.

Great artists like Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklyn and others will be remembered for a long time for their brilliant art.

But the Moneymaker song and others don’t strike me as masterpiece.

I am a great fan of African American culture and I admire the hip hop movement but it seems that the movement got lost on mid 90’s and everything started to be about selling drugs, a*s and more drugs.

Please share your opinions
